Company History

Pearson eCollege evolves to meet the needs of education technology.

Pearson eCollege was founded in 1996 as Real Education, Inc. in Denver, Colorado. That year, the company launched its first online campus for the University of Colorado—still one of our prominent Educational Partners. From 1996 to 2007, eCollege was a leading provider of value-added information service to the postsecondary and K-12 education industries. The company’s eLearning Division has designed, built and supported some of the most successful, fully online degree, certificate/diploma and professional development programs in the country. Customers include publicly traded for-profit institutions, community colleges, public and private universities, school districts and state departments of education. eCollege was acquired by Pearson in 2007, extending the reach and capabilities of both companies to better serve the education industry.

Pearson eCollege has always worked with its partner educational institutions to design, build and support online degree, certificate, diploma and professional development programs. The company also provides a suite of support services which include hosting, help desk, course development, technical consulting, instructional design and faculty training.

Since 2000, Pearson eCollege has held an annual users conference for its clients, now referred to as Pearson CITE. This thought leadership event is dedicated to the use of technology in education and draws more than 500 higher education for-profit and not-for-profit professionals from around the world.

Participants share in the discussion and exchange of information on innovative learning strategies utilizing technology within education. The event provides educators and administrators of fully online and blended learning programs the opportunity to share best practices for teaching and learning, as well as expand their professional networks.
